Hubbell throwing from the left side, was known for throwing a Fastball, Screwball, and Curve. His delivery of his Screwball had a prolonged motion. For five straight seasons (1933-1937), Hubbell won twenty or more games, leading the majors three times and the league in ERA three times. He also led in WHIP six times during his career, including Strikeouts, Innings Pitched, and Shutouts. Clearly, he has a very healthy amount of black type on the back of his baseball card.
Hubbell made his mark during the 1933 season, winning the MVP and the World Series. He won both games in that series, not allowing an earned run in twenty innings. He went the whole game in both games, but in Game 4, he pitched eleven innings. While no World Series MVP was named, the Giants only beat the Senators with Hubbell. Hubbell also has a couple more iconic moments: a No-Hitter thrown against the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 8, 1929. The other would be on July 2, 1933, against the St. Louis Cardinals, where he threw a complete game shutout that took 18 Innings.
Hubbell was a Giant lifer; after his pitching career ended in 1943, the Giants assigned him to be the Director of Player Development, the position he’d spend the next 35 years. Even when the Giants left for San Francisco, he stayed n the East Coast. He even spent the last years working as a scout; by then, he was the last active member employed by baseball who played under John McGraw. In 1999, he was ranked by The Sporting News 100 Greatest Ballplayers List #45.
