On this day in baseball history, June 24, the following noteworthy events occurred.

Jackie Robinson Steals Home for 1st Time:

On this day in 1947, Jackie Robinson, in his first season in the Majors with the Brooklyn Dodgers, was at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, taking on the Pirates. In the fifth inning, with Jackie Robinson at third base, Fritz Ostermueller began his long windup, and with him throwing from the left side, Jackie took off and made it to home plate safely, giving the Dodgers a 3-2 lead. Believe it or not, the opposing crowd applauded, and that would be the first of nineteen times that Jackie Robinson would successfully steal home.

Padres acquire Trevor Hoffman from Marlins:

On this day in 1993, the San Diego Padres and Florida Marlins struck a deal. The Padres sent All-Star Gary Sheffield and Rich Rodriguez to the Florida Marlins in exchange for Jose Martinez, Andres Berumen, and Trevor Hoffman. The best type of trade is one that both teams would do again. Gary Sheffield spent the next five-plus years with the Marlins, which were productive offensively and was a piece to the Marlins winning the World Series in 1997. The Padres got Trevor Hoffman, a future Hall of Fame Closer who spent the next sixteen seasons with the team, recording 552 Saves as the team closer.

Randy Johnson ties Steve Cartlon:

On this day in 1997, Randy Johnson and the Seattle Mariner may have lost a 4-1 game to the Oakland Athletics. However, Randy Johnson struck out 19 batters over a nine-inning span. He joined Steve Carlton as the only two left-handed pitchers to strike out that many batters in a game. Randy Johnson would also reach that feat again that year on August 8.
