Joe DiMaggio ties and breaks all-time Hit Streak:
On this day in 1941, the Yankees played a doubleheader against the Washington Senators at the old Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. Joe DiMaggio was on a 40-game hitting streak at the time, looking to tie and break George Sislers all consecutive time games with a hit record at 41 games. The Yankees won the first game 9-4, with DiMaggio in the sixth inning recording a Double. Then in the second game, the Yankees won 7-5. DiMaggio singled to left field, giving him the record. Despite being in Washington, the crowd applauded DiMaggio for accomplishing such a feat, and the streak would go on for another three weeks, ending at 56 consecutive games with a Hit.
